So this spring will be my final semester at Northeastern and I have one free elective I need to take to fulfill my credit hours - any suggestions? I'm hoping for an interesting, fun class that's not too difficult. I'm a journalism major in case that makes a difference. Thanks!

Graduation question

 hey all!
so, i'm due to graduate this may.  naturally, i'm pretty psyched.  but i do have a question or two - i heard that at the ceremony (the undergraduate graduation at the garden, at least) there is no walking or even reading of names.  is this true?  does everyone just sit the whole time?  my parents are expecting some walking on the stage, a handshake, or at least announcing of my name...will they be completely let down?
thanks in advance for any info!!

ATTN: students with a .edu email address

Amazon is offering a free 1 year subscription to Amazon Prime (Which usually costs $79 a year. Perks include free 2 day shipping, and $3.99 overnight shipping): http://amzn.to/bSH8jP (url shortened with bit.ly)

This is being marketed towards college students but all you need is a valid .edu email address, so teachers and alumni might be able to benefit from this too (though the Terms of Service does say they have the right to ask for proof that you are a current student).

I apologize if you have already heard about this amazing deal. I just want to help spread the word on this before they stop offering it. I am not an employee of Amazon, nor do I gain anything from people signing up for this service.

Anyone still looking for an awesome July co-op?

If you're interested in a career in marketing I know someone at HubSpot who's looking to take in two co-ops. It's one of the fastest growing companies in the area and you will have the opportunity to learn a ton about inbound marketing and data analysis. From what I've seen it's an amazing company to work for and they're a leader in the industry. They're looking for people who are enthusiastic about inbound marketing, social media, and blogging - just having a Facebook isn't going to cut it. If you think this sort of thing is up your alley feel free to e-mail a cover letter and resume here.

summer apt sublet

hey, i'm looking for someone to sublet my apartment this summer (after graduation [i'm very flexible about starting date] until the lease ends at the end of August). rent is $725/month and utilities are very cheap in the summer. it's on st. alphonsus right by tremont street (super close to brigham circle/green line/39 bus, right on the 66 bus line, also close to roxbury crossing/orange line). third floor, large apartment with laundry in the basement. we have a large kitchen and living room and big back deck (with grill). bedroom is average-sized and, if you're interested, i might leave or sell my bedroom furniture.

please email me at lykes.j@neu.edu for pictures/more info or to set up a time to come by and check it out.

thanks.

Looking to sublet my place for the Summer

Hey guys,
I'm going to be on Dialogue and then on co-op (hopefully in DC) Summer I and II. As such, I need to sublet my place, ASAP!

I live on 97 St. Stephen St. in a pretty good sized studio. I've lived here solo for the past three months and it's been great. It could easily fit two people in it, most preferably if you knew one another. This would help because it runs $1250 a month. Not too bad compared to NU on campus, but still kinda steep for the average college student.

That said, the apartment includes heat, hot water, and high speed internet. Cable isn't included; I never ordered it so I'm not sure what it would come to. And electricity runs around $15-$20 a month for me.

It's got a big room, really big bathroom considering it's a studio, a kitchen with a fridge, and a deep closet for good storage space and shiny hardwood floors.

I love this place. So do my friends. YOU WILL TOO!

Give me a call and we can set some time up so I can show it. It's right on campus, so it's very convenient if you want to drop-by.
Also, you can email me at: marden.an@neu.edu  and I can send you pictures or answer any questions.

Thanks a lot

Summer sublet available

My roommate and I are graduating in May and we are hoping to move out of our apartment as soon as possible starting in May (you could move in for the whole summer or just summer 2).

The apartment is on SYMPHONY ROAD. It's a nice building and surprisingly quiet, even on weekends.

• The apartment has 2 large bedrooms (both EASILY fit a full bed)

• Very large living room with a huge mirror

• Very clean bathroom and kitchen

• Each bedroom has a good sized closet and there is also a big closet in the living room

• Rent is $2400/month

• Electricity is only about $20/person (even in the summer with the AC!)

• Heat and hot water are included in the rent - washer/dryers in basement

We are willing to compromise on move in dates, prices, things you would like to be left behind like air conditioners or certain pieces of furniture.

You can contact me at: enman.l@husky.neu.edu if you are interested!

Class recommendations?

This fall will be my final semester at NU, and I've put off taking my natural world core class. I'm looking for something that wont be overly challenging, as quite frankly I'm at the end and want to be semi-lazy. I'm looking at:
BIOL 1147 - The Human Organism with Prof Yashon
PHYS 1121 - Intro to Science with an unknown prof

Has anyone taken these? How were they? Do you have any other recommendations for an easy(ish) natural world class?

Also, has anyone taken Advertising and Promotional Culture with Nakayama or any other prof? I'm trying to decide between it and Producing for the Entertainment Industry.

Thanks guys!

Just a humble somewhat recent NU alum x-posting that I'm looking for some roommates for my ridiculously awesome and ridiculously cheap apartment in S-ville. If you still have to get to Northeastern there are 2 bus lines at the end of the block that will take you to the Orange at Sullivan in less than 10 minutes. There's also a bus at the opposite end of the block that goes right to Lechemere in less than 10 minutes as well, but we all know how much the Green line blows.

I chose fall housing for myself and 3 friends, an apartment in E with 4 singles. One of them just got a co-op offer from a company in California, so she obviously will be canceling her fall housing. She still has spring housing though, so what will happen? I assume Northeastern will give her spot for fall to someone, but is it possible that they'll give it to someone who only needs fall housing and give her the room in E when she comes back?

This is where seeing into the future would have been useful, because if she's not going to get the room in spring, we could have chosen a 3 person room!

Northeastern calls an end to football

Becoming successful is deemed too costly

By Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff | November 23, 2009

Northeastern University plans to announce today that it is ending its football program after 74 seasons, saying it is unwilling to invest the millions of dollars needed to improve the team to meet the school’s ambitions.

President Joseph E. Aoun and the board of trustees endorsed the move Friday after an extensive, two-year review of the athletic program by its director, Peter Roby. The decision to eliminate football follows six straight losing seasons and sparse game attendance at a school whose ice rink often sells out for hockey.

Northeastern football did not fall victim to the recession or a fund-raising crunch, university officials said. Instead, school officials came to terms with the hard truth that the $3 million-plus annual program needed more help - millions more each year - than Northeastern wanted to give.

Read more...Collapse )

RIP Northeastern football, 1933-2009. Anyone a big fan? I never went to a game during undergrad (2002-2006), but it's still sad for the team and that NU failed in this regard. Though it does make sense financially. I agree with the decision just kind of sad anyways.

failing?

hey guys - junior here with a question i've never thought i'd have to ask...
i'm not doing so well this semester for so many, many reasons.

what happens when you fail a course?
this might sound like the dumbest question ever, and i'm sorry if it is.  i looked around the registrar's website and did my degree audit and am still a little confused.

does it count as completing the class?  will i have to retake it?
it's a required course in the sense that i have to take 4 level 400 courses in that area and this is one i chose.  so i could repeat it, if need be, or just pick another one another semester.

the thing is, i've switched majors a few times and really need to stay on track to graduate on time and not pay northeastern even more of my money.  i don't really want to withdraw, for the chance that i just might turn everything around and not fail.

any help is appreciated, sorry if i'm a complete idiot.

I'm about to start my last semester and that means that I not only have to take my science requirement, but do rather well in the class as well. And since Natural Disasters & Catastrophes sounded like the best way to do so, that's what I've signed on for.

I've heard varying things about the class, but was overjoyed to find out that the book was merely recommended.

For those of you who have taken this class - just how much would you "recommend" such an investment? I'm terrible at anything science-related, but I've also heard that exam questions aren't exceptionally relevant to the material covered, i.e., who narrated some film.

Looking for roommates?

Hi! My name's Michelle and I'm going to be a middler at NU this year. After having put it off for way too long, I'm looking at places to live next year and hoping to find another roommate or two!  At this point we have a couple people committed to living together, (myself, a 21 year old guy, and a 21 year old girl, all NU undergrads) but we just went and saw some gorgeous 5BRs, so if we take one we'll have 1-2 spots available!  We're going to haggle to get the price lowered (and since a 5BR is going to be so hard for the dealer to move this late that seems feasible), so with utilities it would be about 800-900 a month, which is also the range we're looking at for any other places we might choose.  We're looking at some right on campus, and others down Mass Ave a bit so up to 15 minutes walk from campus into the South End.  Seriously though, this 5BR we saw down by Mass Ave and Washington is absolutely gorgeous, 3 floor townhouse with tons of windows and right in the adorable part of the South End... I'm really hoping it's the one we end up in!
So - If you would be interested in possibly living together with other studious, respectful, fun people, send me a message!  Male, female, straight, gay, no problem as long as you're a nice, drama-free person.  And if you know anyone who's looking too please refer them to this message haha since it's getting late to be doing this.  My email's bellaboo1316@aol.com. (so email me OR use that to facebook me!) Looking forward to hearing from you! Michelle :)
PS - one of the bedrooms is HUGE so if you have a friend you'd like to share a BR with we can easily set it up to share that one.  Also, I can send you pics of this 5BR i'm telling you about if you want!

Room Still Available

Hello, folks

Sorry to bug you all again: I still have one room available for the Septempber '09 to August '10 rental period. The room is $650/month, located on Lawn Street near the Heath Street stop, and is in a really awesome apartment. It's right by Jamaica Plain, five minutes from a Stop and Shop, and really close to the Jackson Square stop on the Orange Line. You're on your own for furniture in the bedroom, but there is some stuff already in the apartment. If you're interested, please contact me here or by e-mail: epynephrin [at] gmail [dot] com.

You'll have two roommates: myself and a girl (and cat) in the other downstairs room. There are two porches, front and back, a large kitchen and living room, two bathrooms, a fireplace, and skylights. It's on the third floor, and was the owner's unit. Seriously sweet apartment, and one I don't want to leave!

E-mail headline from The Huntington News (nee NU News):

"BREAKING NEWS: CORNICE COLLAPSE WEB UPDATE: Cause of fall still undetermined; NU officials send university-wide ale"

Two points of contention:
1. "Still undetermined" is not really much of an update, and certainly does not warrant headline status in a "breaking news" e-mail.
2. Where may I pick up my "university-wide ale"?

I am able to take every class I need to graduate in the next year except for one.  It is a requirement for my major but it's only offered every other year and the last time it was offered, I was studying abroad.

I'm just wondering what my options are (besides staying the extra year for one class).  I've heard about Consortium schools NU students can take classes at, but never found anything about the through the NU website.  Can anyone give me any info on this?

Thanks a lot!
