Safety first... Columbus ave??

Hey yall.  So I'm a 20 year old female and I work at a restaurant in the Pru until as late as 11 PM; if I lived on Columbus or that area next year, do you think it'd be sketchy/dangerous to walk home alone at night?  More or less so than other areas, at least?  (I'm trying to figure out where & with whom to live next year, shoot me... )

I find your "shoot me" comment pretty ironic.

I'm a proctor (dorm card swiper), the shift I usually take ends at 11. I've worked at the dorms in the Columbus Ave area a lot and walking back was never a problem for me. I'm assuming you mean living on Columbus Ave that's on campus. It's a busy enough street. You honestly have just as much chance getting mugged anywhere else. One of my coworker's friends got mugged on Symphony St last year, so, if it's gonna happen, it'll happen.

I would probably walk through Ruggles if I was that worried. Don't go over the bridge near Matthews Arena.

no way, ruggles is super dangerous at night.

i live on columbus right now and i have for the past year (610) and honestly i walk all over the place by myself at all hours of the night....walking home from the pru at 11 is no big deal. i would go down huntington to mass ave then turn on columbus, that way you're always in well lit areas. keep your phone handy and be aware of your surroundings, but there's no reason to be overly-scared or anything.

I would say it's pretty safe, but just keep an extra eye out. The bonus is that NUPD headquarters is over there, which is why I never felt excessively nervous when I briefly lived in Coventry oh so many years ago, it feels like now.

But I second what littlestarletta said about not using the bridge near Matthews. I personally tend to use the staircase next to Ruggles and go through the parking lot - there's a guard up there, and usually someone in the parking booth.

i work in belmont (somewhat neighboring suburb outside of harvard square) until after 11 pm and have a half hour t commute. i take the 1 bus up mass ave and get out at the corner of new york pizza on columbus. it's a really sketchy walk until i get past the tennis courts. but if you walk through campus past the starbucks in curry and over that bridge through the parking lot or over the bridge next to ruggles, its okay.
but in general, you should avoid that whole block of new york pizza to the end of the tennis courts any time after 9 p.m.
and the bridge next to matthews is the sketchiest thing on the planet.
even the security guard, when he's there, is really creepy.

I knew someone who got held up at gunpoint on the bridge by matthews at like 10pm...and her boyfriend was with her. Just DONT go that way.

that's so silly. i live on that block. nothing has ever happened to me or any of my friends, nor have i heard of anything happening in the year i've lived here. you make it sound like there are people waiting in the bushes to jump out and club you.

just be smart. like someone else said, people get mugged everywhere, even on st. stephen or gainsborough. always walk with confidence, don't be on your phone or listening to your ipod, make eye contact with strangers so they know not to mess with you, and program NUPD into your speed dial and keep your phone in your pocket if you feel especially nervous.

I've walked to NU from Back Bay station alone before at 2am before, going down Columbus with no problems. I don't think I saw a single person.

I like the bridge to the Columbus Lot because there are always police cars patrolling the lot at night.
