Consortium Schools?

I am able to take every class I need to graduate in the next year except for one.  It is a requirement for my major but it's only offered every other year and the last time it was offered, I was studying abroad.

I'm just wondering what my options are (besides staying the extra year for one class).  I've heard about Consortium schools NU students can take classes at, but never found anything about the through the NU website.  Can anyone give me any info on this?

Thanks a lot!

Summester at Aquarium

Does anyone know what the deal is with the $5 tickets to the New England Aquarium/IMAX? They were listed in Summester events on the myNEU portal, but it isn't showing up in myPay. It said that it was an all summer discount. Can I just show my ID at the Aquarium or something?

Thanks!

Physics for Engineers Textbook

If anyone needs the textbook/lab manual/iClicker/WebAssign package for Physics for Engineers 1 and 2, I am hoping to get rid of mine before I move out of my current apartment. I think it will be a better deal for both parties if I can sell it directly.

-The book is brand new, it just sat in a drawer
-The iClicker is missing the battery cover on the back (I just covered it with packing tape)
-The lab manual is written in a lot (if that bothers you I will sell you the other stuff without the lab manual and you can get a new one from Gnomon copy)
-The WebAssign "scratch ticket" with the access code has not been scratched off, so you'll know it is a new, unused code. The ticket is only for one semester, so you'll have to buy a second ticket if you're taking physics 1 and 2.

If anyone is interested, check out how much it would cost you to get this stuff elsewhere and then make me an offer. I am on campus so I can meet whenever.

You can comment here or email kilcoyne.h@neu.edu
And if for some reason you want pictures I can post some...

SUMMESTER

Hey All,

Quick Question.....

The Summester post disappeared off of the Announcements on MyNEU like it always does because I suspect as usual I am about to be but fucked by NU.

I wanted to go to Rent to to Martha's Vineyard and of course now neither is listed in the list of Summester events on the website with the list of events.

Any input? Does anybody know if they are still going to happen?

I fucking hate this school sometimes..... heaven forbid they do something for everyone, or stick to a commitment.

Thank You

My two roommates will be moving out in September, and I don't want to.
  1. I hate moving
  2. I truly love my apartment
That said, I will have two rooms available and I really, really need to fill them in order to keep the apartment. If you're looking for a place to live come September, have you considered Lawn Street at the Jamaica Plain/Mission Hill border?

The Apartment:
Formerly the Owners' unit, a two floor, 3-bedroom (two down, one up) apartment with a kitchen, two decks (front and back with steps). A bathroom on each level, a really decently sized kitchen, and a really nice street. The hot water is partially run by a set of solar panels on the roof.

Here's what you get:
  • Easy access to the Green Line's Heath St. Stop, fairly close to Jackson Square on the Orange.
  • Few minutes walk to a Stop and Shop, Gamestop, and Centre Street.
  • A decent room at a fair price.
  • Hot water included
  • Quiet street, nice neighbors, close to a plot of public gardens.
  • And you have to deal with me, and my movie collection.
What you need to do:
Leave me a comment. I have two rooms, and when word gets out people will be all over them!

Crossposted to beantownkids, apologies to members of both.
Edit: rooms are $650, and as we're renewing the lease, I believe first/last/security are taken care of. Will need to double-check with existing roommates. There is no fee, unless you want to pay me simply for the fun of it! For further information, you can also e-mail me at epynephrin [at] gmail [dot] com (Mon, 10:54AM)

Storage

I need a storage place for 2 months, that does pickup and delivery. Suggestions?

I lived in DP for Summer 1 and left all my stuff in a spare closet, since my roommate said she was okay with storing the things there. I talked to the RD and apparently move out for coop students (like my roommate) is earlier, so I can't keep my things there anymore. I'm going on a Dialogue until August 20 and won't be back until after the move out date. I'm back in Boston for about 8 hrs on July 2 before flight abroad, and need to find a storage place for my things asap. I'm from CA so I can't exactly move everything back home.

Everything's all packed up in garbage bags, I just need to find an affordable place to hold my stuff. I thought about Public Storage but don't have a car and can't rent a car to bring my things there.

Hair salons

I entered a hair salon last week with semi-decent hair; I walked out with a mullet. Needless to say, each day that I look in the mirror and see my hair, I die a little inside.
Does anyone know where I can find a reasonably priced salon? Even a mediocre haircut is better than what I have and I can't bear to shell out another $45.

Finding Off-Campus Apartments

As a relatively new graduate student at Northeastern, it's been pretty tough for me to find affordable, off-campus housing.  Craigslist has a lot of ads, but searching is pretty tough and I seem to see a lot of duplicates, not to mention trolls and fake postings.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I got together with a few friends and we contacted some local landlords and rental companies.  A few days ago, we finished putting together a free website that (we think) is a little easier to use and a little more effective when searching for apartments.  There's no signup or login, and it's completely free to use, so if any fellow Huskies find it helpful, I think we'll consider ourselves satisfied.

Please take a look:

parking on mission hill

So for the last bit of co-op I'll be needing to keep a car because the dude I carpool with is leaving. My land lord is an asshole and charges an exorbitant amount to park behind my house. I'm living in my apartment for two more months so it's not worth switching insurance and all just for the sticker. What streets are kosher to park on with an out of state plate overnight kind of near st. alphonsus? I know it'll probably be a hike to my car every morning but it's worth saving the money. Everytime I look for a place it's either 2 spots for visitor around oswald and calumet (WHICH ARE ALWAYS TAKEN) or resident-only ville land.

For anybody who's ever wondered, apparently the Registrar is an actual individual. With a real name and a face and everything that a real person has (well, except for a soul, perhaps). This comes as a surprise to me, having always assumed that the Office of the Registrar was just that- an office, and not a person. I always thought it was just like, a team.

I mention this having just gotten into an actual verbal argument with the "Associate Registrar" (or ass registrar, if I may abbrev). I submitted the Status Change form two weeks ago, like I was supposed to, to change my division from supposed-to-have-graduated to graduated-but-stupid, but apparently, said form was lost at some point between front desk and processing desk (how you manage to lose a piece of paper which is supposed to go directly to somebody sitting about 12 feet from you is beyond me, but that's a different discussion for a different time). I reluctantly went and got the form filled out, yet again, at the dean's office, only to find out that I'll also need the course add/drop forms filled out and signed by the instructor, department, Piper from the dining hall, and Aoun's second cousin, once removed. In triplicate. I attempted to argue with three of the flying monkeys at the Registrar's office before the ass registrar came out from behind the curtain and told me I had to get the form signed, no way around it, and that's that.

It pains me that Northeastern doesn't even act like they're in the customer service industry, when really, they should be. Just because students aren't going to transfer schools over this kind of shit doesn't mean we should have to put up with it. This school has gotten enough of our families' money that any retail store would consider us A++, Level 5, Top Priority, Platinum Class customers, and I personally think it's high time they start treating us as such. Sending us around campus in a hunt for wild signatures because they lost paperwork is absurd, and I HATE YOU!

Parking for Fall

Okay possibly another stupid question.

I'm living in Douglass Park next Fall, and will be on a co-op that requires me to have a car. I know you can park on Columbus for free, sooo is it wise of me to forgo a parking pass? They're 50% off for co-op kids this go-round, so I'm kind of inclined to just get it, but if it's really doable without one I'd rather save myself the $375.

Also any info about living in Doulass would be cool too. Does it suck? Is it as nice as the photos look?

Thanks guys!

I bought something off eBay the other day and the guy shipped it to my address at school- Speare Hall, even though I'm home for summer vacation. Will they automatically forward it to my house or do I have to contact someone to do it for me?

Is there any way to opt out of the emergency contact list once we've graduated?  I graduated in May and have deleted my phone number so I no longer get calls but I still get the emails.  I mean I love knowing that NU's finals have been changed due to snow or that I may be at risk of getting the mumps (since I live 25 miles from Boston now...) but enough is enough.  Solutions?

Anyone still looking for a summer sublet?

Hey guys,

My roommate and I are looking to sublet our apartment at 97 St. Stephens St. The rent is $2000/mo which includes heat and hot water, making it just below the price of West Village housing. The place is on the other side of the street from the on-campus St. Stephens St housing, so any commute to summer classes would be extremely short.

The rooms are pretty big and there's also a kitchen, bathroom, and small walkway with enough room for a small to medium sized table. If anyone is interested please comment since we'd like to get this squared away before we graduate this May. Thanks a bunch.

Waitressing with no experience?

Hey, so I've heard good waitresses can make pretty good money, and I really want to try it.  Problem is I have no experience.  Anyone have ideas of what places will train someone who has never waited tables before?  (I don't really want to be a hostess, I know some places will make you start there but ideally I'd like not to.)  I'm living on Symphony and trying to brainstorm places around the Pru, Copley, even Washington street has some restaurants but I doubt they'd hire me.... I've got some ideas but I want yours!
Anyone with experience getting hired without experience, or just waitressing in general, got any tips for me here?
And if you can think of any better job to make rent please share that too?  haha.
Thanks a lot people.  Hope you're having a great spring and enjoying this beauuutiful weather :)

I hope they didn't use my money to build the 360 gallery

I'm less than a month from graduating. Here are some things I've noticed over the past years about the ridiculousness of Northeastern, for those who care.

1. I've never been able to get the cool tables at Curry. You know, the ones on the first floor (which should really be the second floor) by the windows looking down onto the food court. I've never sat on one of those, I've never even seen people get up from one of those. They're the holy grail of Curry seating and I will die without the satisfaction of experiencing the smugness that comes with it.

2. Course evaluations mean NOTHING.

3. Buying books is almost completely unnecessary.

4. Thank God for the death of Quackers. Seriously, having to even see the duck on the paper was one of the most painful experiences here.

5. The student government is a joke, most people don't know what it does, and most people don't care. The only way I've actually seen myself affected by it is by limiting my printing to 400 pages per semester, which was insanely annoying given how much reading I have to do.

6. I never understood what compelled people to vote for Fiore.

7. NU's bureaucracy... it's so deeply troubled the very fact that you get ANYthing to happen the way you want it to is a success. Such as actually being able to see your advisor at a convenient time because of some problem in the system. The feeling of accomplishment is so great that it makes you forget how ridiculous the problem is to begin with. That is, as Douglas Adams would put it, Northeastern's fundamental flaws are completely hidden by Northeastern's superficial flaws.

8. Paying is the easiest thing you could possibly do at Northeastern

9. I was once lost at the Meserve-Lake-Nightingale-Holmes cluster*uck for a week. They found me on floor 8 1/2 chewing on the carpet.

10. Why, WHY would they put modern languages on the top floor of Meserve, and the World Language program in the basement of Nightingale? WHY?!

11. There are so many more of these ridiculous things... thinking of them just pisses me off....

That said, I still think this school was pretty ok.
Also, I'll miss it.

Overcharged for summer 1 classes?

I'm taking middler english and a biology course with a lab for summer 1 (total 9 credits). I checked my bill and noticed that I'm being charged $9808 for the classes when they're only supposed to be $8330. Even if I was charged overload for having 9 credits, it still should only be $9371. Anyone know what's going on there since if I'm allowed to take up to 19 credits during regular semesters, I should at least be given a 1 credit leeway for summer semesters. I've already emailed student accounts but I wanted to vent a little and see if this happened to anyone else.
I will not be pleased if this is some sneaky way NU has of sucking more money out of me.

1 Bedroom Summer Sublet Available!

1 bedroom, fully furnished sublet available in Somerville, right in Davis Square. Move-in date can be anywhere between May 15 to June 1. It’s a less-than-five minute walk to the Davis Square stop on the Red T-line.

Rent would be $900 + approximately $70 for utilities (including cable and internet).

We’re on the first floor and there’s a living room with TV, a fully furnished kitchen (and a nice one at that), and bathroom.

The room has a closet, a dresser, a desk, and bed. There is access to a free washer and dryer in the basement and there is one parking space in the back.

I have a roommate already, she’s in the journalism department in Emerson.

Like I said before, you can move in between May 15 to June 1st. The room is available until September 1st, but there is a possibility of extending for the rest of the school year.

If you or anyone you know is interested, please call me at 347-596-1708 or email me at nadia.chaudhury@gmail.com.

Thanks!

So after being off campus for over 2 years, I'm taking it back in to live on campus for my final year. Just wondering, does the cable on campus include hd channels? I noticed in the tv channel guide that there are channels reserved for hd, but I don't remember if we actually had any or not. If there are some, is there a box required to watch on hdtvs?

Cheap Hotels?

So, almost finally out of here. Parents have decided to make this a big deal and are flying all the way over here from their respective corners. I need a hotel, guys, something cheap, something decent looking, and something cheap. Any ideas? Doesn't have to be in Boston, could be in Cambridge. Hell, could be in Somerville! Doesn't even have to be a hotel, could be a bed and breakfast or a telephone booth. Suggestions are appreciated.

graduation clearance

What, exactly, must one do in order to obtain graduation clearance? Is there some form to fill out to say "guess what, I've hit my requirements and sold you my soul in cash, please give me my diploma?" or is there some sort of interview/meeting process?

(Nope, this isn't for May. I'm not that much of a procrastinator.)

housing survey

What's the deal with the housing survey?  Are they required?  Where can I get one?  Friend got theirs in WVA already but didn't submit it.  Now supposedly they had to write a letter of apology?!  wtf?    I'm in WVE and never got  one yet.

Stuff?

How exactly does a co-op work?

Do you have to play an instrument to be a Music Industry Concentration Major?

I got 2 D's (in Precalc and physics) my first semester of my senior year (this year) and I'm assuming Northeastern doesn't care? I sent my mid-year transcript and they didn't  say anything.
I dropped physics for the second semester. It's not a mandatory class. Is this going to effect anything? Is it possible that they might revoke my admission?
The 600 NONREFUNDABLE deposit is due may 1st and I still have to send in my final transcript at the end of the school year.
So does this mean that if I send them 600 dollars and then they decide that they are going to revoke my admission that I won't get that money back?

Should I go to Northeastern?

EDIT://

If I applied as a certain major is that the major that I HAVE TO stay with if I actually decide to enroll?

I just got my acceptance letter the other day and I have no idea if I should go to Northeastern.
I guess I'm just getting scared/nervous now that graduation is so close and I have to start making decisions now.

Do you love Northeastern? What are some of your favorite things about it?

Do you like Boston? Is it busy? Too busy?

What do you not like about Northeastern/Boston?

Was it a hard transition from your hometown to Boston?

Anyway, I guess I am just looking for some opinions from people who were in the situation I am in now.

I live in Oregon and the cost of living is 23% higher in Boston, do you find things to be super expensive there, does it make a difference?

summer sublet

I am looking for someone to sublet my room for the summer. The apartment is a 3 bedroom 2 bath on Mass Ave at Washington. We have a full 2 floors of the building with laundry in the unit. There is exposed brick in the living room and my bedroom. The room could potentially be shared by two people. Parking is available if needed. Cats are ok with the landlord. You would be living with 2 girls, one from Northeastern and one from Emerson. The walk to campus is about 20 minutes.
Rent and move in date are negotiable, let me know what you're able to do.
