I would contact people at housing, but I honestly think your friend is out of luck. I don't think they'll necessarily put someone in that room who will only need it for the fall. Unless the person who takes that fourth single leaves after the fall, the single will remain the person who had it in the fall.

Maybe call them and ask them if they will only put someone in there who needs it for the fall? But again, people won't know they're leaving for the fall, just like how your friend didn't know she wouldn't need housing.

I agree with this. I've been the person leaving unexpectedly twice in my time at NU and you just get put wherever there is open space when you return. As the person above said whoever takes your friend's spot for the fall likely won't know if they will be leaving for the spring until halfway through the fall semester (unless they're a senior planning to graduate in December). Regardless of what the person knows, housing is highly unlikely to take that into account.

You can always keep your friend updated, though, and if the new person is leaving after the fall your friend can request a spring room in fairly specific detail and could probably get placed back into your room.
